Religion oriented the entire lives of early colonists, impacting the institutions they created, the interactions they had, and the cultural norms they established. Today, religion is no less influential in American culture. It shapes the personal realms of its citizens, as well as every institution within it.

From the earliest portable video recorders, anthropologists have attempted to capture human behavior through film. This course will focus on the use of film as a tool to document cultures, both modern and historic. It will include intensive viewing and analysis of many ethnographic films depicting behavior, ritual, and cultures from a wide range of filmmakers and global cultures.

The class will critique and compare these various themes. Only students who know that they want to teach at the elementary or early childhood level up to the fifth grade only, and not at the high school level, should consider this path.

In order to become a Sociology major, students must complete the foundation courses listed above with the minimum grade or higher. Those who earn an acceptable grade on their second attempt at the course will be removed from probation.

All Sociology majors must earn grades of C- or higher in all SOC and ANT courses, in addition to meeting the foundation and critical content course grade minimums.
